Blue whale vs zodiac

A matter of scale: when a regular sized zodiac looks more like a tiny little nutshell.

Blue whales are the biggest animals to have ever lived on this planet, dinosaurs included. They can reach a length of more than 30 meters – with a heart weighing as much as a grown up elephant and a mouth big enough to host a regular sized school class.

Comparisons like the ones above are the one thing to get a feeling of how HUGE these animals really are. And then, there’s reality. I’ll never forget the moment, when we met our first blue whale in Quebec: it surfaced totally out of nowhere, no more than twenty meters next to the boat. It took my breath away. Theresa was literally terrified.

Of course, we knew that blue whales were big. But we weren’t prepared at all. This never ending back, endlessly rolling, meter by meter, so hard to imagine.

The boat above is between seven and eight meters long, a regular sized zodiac with seven or eight people on board and room for some more. And the whales fluke alone is nearly the size of this boat. Impressive!

This video ist shot by Slater Moore, I’m a big fan, he’s doing exceptional and stunning drone shots of whales while doing whale watching safaris from Monterey, California – a great place to see a wide variety of whales all year long.
