With 15 to 20 meters, right whales are not among the largest of all whales. But with up to 100 tons they’re certainly among the heaviest. These guys are massive. In relation to their length, they’re even the heaviest of all whales – by far!

Just for scale: those dolphins in this video are about two meters long and weigh up to 150 kilograms. So, you would need way more than 500 of them to match the right whales’ weight. 500 of those dolphins!

Right whales are not always as relaxed as in this video – despite to their weight, they can be pretty active: they love to breach, sometimes with even three or more breaches in a row. And they can be very curious – they often come really close to the boats to inspect the whale watchers.

If you want to meet southern right whales you have to travel far south – with best chances between June and November from South Africa, South America and Southern Australia.
